It has happened. The same tree, by the same wall, on the same branch once again. I wait for it every year. It is a bit of a guessing game...like waiting for a surprise.......and it makes me so happy every single time. A peek of future fire revealed in one clump of green leaves. As if it were saying, "Let's go now, let's go now, let's go now!" to the other branches and they whisper back, "Not yet!" But too late! POOF! The exuberance of autumn like a flush of pleasure on a summer tree's face.
And I would be remiss if I did not
The morns are meeker than they were
The nuts are getting brown
The berry's cheek is plumper
The rose is out of town
The maple wears a gayer scarf
The field a scarlet gown
Lest I sh'd be old-fashioned
I'll put a trinket on.
-Emily Dickinson
