Pretty, Happy, Funny, Real: Laughter is the best Medicine

So many ups and downs have occurred in the last few months.  I won't go into them here, but they have left me rather tired and confusedly fizzled and sighing deeply the words "what next?"  Nothing terrible or life changing in a dire sense, but the kind of things that pile up and make you wish you lived alone on a hill surrounded by trees, with an unending supply of coffee ice cream.  Whenever these kind of times wash up on my shore, I turn to my "happy place" movies.  You know, the ones that make you laugh out loud every time.  The ones that are filled with that snappy dialogue which makes you think true humor still exists, the kind that make you turn from laughter to tears in the same hour.  All of these movies have never failed me in my fizzled states.  Laughter is truly the prettiest, happiest, funniest, truest form of medicine there is.   Let's here it for:

  Roman Holiday

Touching, funny, a perfect love story in every way!  Hilarious in places and romantic to the core.  Rome. Audrey Hepburn. Gregory Peck. Eddie Albert.  Princesses, writers, lots of cafes, motor bikes, dancing.

  Galaxy Quest
We found this quite by mistake once at the video store and laughed until we fell.  Every ounce of this movie is hysterical and if you were ever at all a Trek-y (come on, you know you were once) , you will laugh even harder.  And if you are an Alan Rickman fan, as I most certainly am, you will love it.  There is also some quite touching moments sprinkled in there, too.

3.  It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World
I hate, detest, and abhor slapstick comedy.  That is why I cannot explain why I love this movie so much.  It is full of old fashioned slap stick and obvious humor, but some of it just makes me guffaw and make snorting noises.  Almost every single funny guy is in this movie.  Even my very proper, Victorian Grandmama Florence was reduced to tears of laughter by this movie.  You won't stay depressed for very long after you start watching it.

4. Philadelphia Story
Hurrah for snappy dialogue and intelligent humor.  This story is absolutely quick and witty and fun and crazy.  I love it!  Plus, once again, some very touching moments that make you think about what love really is.

5.  The Women
Rosalind Russell fans unite!  She is hysterical in this great movie about marriage and forgiveness.  Every woman in this movie is funny in her own right.  Again, snappy humor and realistic views.

An Ideal Husband

Ah, the English comedy. Sigh...is there anything better than Wilde done by Rupert Everett?  This is witty, charming, lovely, visually beautiful and full of the best actors England has to offer.

There you have it.  My go to movies when I am sad or blue.  Guaranteed to make you laugh.

  1. Love, love your list! Have you seen The More The Merrier, starring Joel Mcrea, Jean Arthur and Charles Coburn? It's a genuine laugh out loud screw ball comedy. I think you'd love it. Hang in there!

  3. What a fun list! I love 'Philadelphia Story' & 'Roman Holiday'. Those older movies always bring back memories of watching TCM with my mom. :)
